We delve into the world of hospitality with Charles Richez, the esteemed General Manager of Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes and Area Manager for several prestigious properties, including Hôtel Barrière Le Gray d’Albion and Les Neiges Courchevel. With a career marked by resilience and a commitment to excellence, Richez reflects on his path—from early inspiration to leading some of the most iconic destinations in French hospitality. He speaks candidly about the evolution of luxury, the importance of team culture, and the innovations shaping the guest experience today.
Can you share your journey in the hospitality industry and what initially inspired you to pursue this career?
My father worked in the industry, and through him, I met many of his colleagues, which inspired me to embrace a career in hospitality. This early exposure ignited a passion for the field.
How did your experiences in the United States shape your approach to hotel management upon your return to France?
Working in the U.S. provided me with solid foundations for managing a team and understanding how to run a business. The positive mindset prevalent in American business culture taught me that anything is possible if you think big.
What attracted you to the Barrière Group, and how has your role evolved since you joined in 2015?
The Barrière Group is unique in that it owns and operates most of its assets and has been governed by the same family for 100 years. Their long-term vision and commitment to preserving cultural values in luxury hospitality drew me in. I’m incredibly grateful to the Barrière family and my boss for their trust in me to manage these beautiful hotels.
As the General Manager of Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes, what do you find most rewarding about your position?
Managing the team is both challenging and rewarding. When everyone works in perfect harmony, we create a welcoming environment with high service standards, making each guest’s stay memorable.
How do you balance your responsibilities as General Manager with your role as Area Manager for multiple properties?
I am fortunate to have strong support from excellent teams in each hotel, with competent managers overseeing operations at each property.
What specific initiatives have you implemented at Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes to enhance guest satisfaction?
We continually upgrade and reinvent our service standards. Recently, we revamped all our sea-view rooms and our beach restaurant at the Majestic. We’ve enhanced our amenities with premier brands like Guerlain and partnered with Balmain and Bonpoint. Our service offerings, including breakfast and restaurant menus, are redesigned regularly to delight guests with fresh products and flavors. For instance, our beach restaurant is inspired by the fish and seafood concept of Ciro’s, which originated in Deauville where our group story began 100 years ago.
How do you maintain a refined yet authentic luxury experience at your properties?
We prioritize using local products and knowledge to showcase the best of what the region offers. Authenticity is one of our core values.
In your opinion, how has the concept of luxury in hospitality evolved over the years?
Luxury has become much more casual compared to the past. Guests now expect excellent service in an unpretentious atmosphere, with staff providing individualized care and attention.
Can you describe your leadership style and how you cultivate a positive team atmosphere?
It’s essential for team members to thoroughly understand their roles, and I believe in trusting them to go the extra mile for each guest. While standards are important, encouraging initiative is key. My daily challenge is to empower the team to think outside the box to deliver personalized service tailored to each guest’s unique preferences.
What are your hopes for the future of Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes and the other properties under your management?
I’m optimistic about very positive trends for all our properties. We are situated in prime locations with fantastic team members, and being part of the luxury segment, where the hospitality business is experiencing the most growth, bodes well for the future of the Barrière Group.
What advice would you give to young professionals aspiring to build a career in the hospitality industry?
Embrace the journey and stay aware, as our sector continues to grow. Every day presents new challenges, but the best part is the incredible guests you meet and the team members you support.
